Your electronic medical data card

Everyone insured with DAK-Gesundheit receives an electronic medical data card, also known as a health insurance card. It is also used as your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This card allows you to receive medical treatment from a doctor almost anywhere in Europe. To issue your insurance card, you must submit a photograph of yourself.

Why do I need the DAK insurance card?

The health insurance card is your personal ID for medical services. All the necessary information about your health insurance is stored on the insurance card. The card is scanned at your doctor’s surgery or at the hospital. We also pay for your medical treatment with it. It is best to always have the card with you.

If you do not receive your insurance card immediately, we will give you a treatment certificate for the mean time, which you should ideally always have with you.

When will I receive my insurance card?

Everyone who is insured with DAK-Gesundheit automatically receives an electronic medical data card by post. However, a photo is required before we can issue your medical data card. We will therefore send you a letter giving you all the information you need. The letter contains a number: This is your photo ID, which you can use to upload the photo for your card yourself.

In order to issue you with the card, you need to provide us with the address at which you are permanently registered. If you cannot provide us with an address, we can issue you with a provisional treatment certificate which you can present to the doctor.

What information is stored on my card?

Your medical data card has a small chip that stores information such as your name, address and membership number. You will find your photo on the front. Please sign your name on the back of the card.

What should I do if I lose my card?

If you lose your card, please let us know. We can send you a provisional certificate to present to the doctor if you need one. We will also send you a new electronic medical data card. You can also request a new card on our website or through our app.

Can I go to the doctor without an insurance card?

Yes, you can still go to a doctor if you have forgotten your medical data card or have not yet received a new one. However, you are obliged to provide the card to the doctor’s practice within 10 days.

If this is not possible, we will be happy to send you a replacement certificate. If you do not present your card or the replacement certificate within 10 days, the practice is entitled to privately charge you for the treatment.

Can I also go to the doctor with the medical data card in my home country?

Yes, our insurance card is accepted in most European countries. The doctor’s surgery will invoice us as they would for a visit to a doctor in Germany. If you are issued an invoice, please cover the cost yourself for the time being. You can send us the invoice and we will reimburse you in line with our contractual terms.

You must cover any additional payments or deductibles.

An exception is Bosnia-Herzegovina. In this case, you will need a certificate of entitlement to healthcare abroad. You can obtain this from our customer service team or download it from the website under ‘My DAK’.

Where am I insured with my DAK health insurance?

With your DAK health insurance card, you can go to the doctor or hospital in most European countries. This is because the EHIC is on the back on the card.

Your DAK health insurance card can be used in the following countries: Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary, United Kingdom and Cyprus (only in the Greek part).
