Frequently used benefits

Sickness benefit

What is sickness benefit?
If you are ill, your employer will in most cases continue to pay your salary for the first six weeks that you are off work. After that, we will pay you sickness benefit amounting to 70% of your salary, so that you can recover without financial worries. We will pay this sickness benefit for a maximum of 18 months.

How do I receive sickness benefit?
Generally, no action is required on your part, as we receive your sick leave notice electronically directly from your doctor. We then automatically check whether and when you are entitled to sickness benefit and get in touch with you.

If your doctor’s surgery does not yet offer an electronic sick leave notice (eAU), you must submit your sick leave notice to us within the first week of being unable to work. You can do this by post or online via our website or the DAK app. The same applies if sick notes have been issued by a doctor abroad.

Any further sick leave notices must also be received by us within a week. Consecutive sick leave notices must continue without interruption from previous sick leave notices. For weekends, it is sufficient for the consecutive sick leave notice to start on the next working day.

Prescriptions

Do I have pay for medicines I buy at the pharmacy?
If your doctor prescribes medication that you need for medical reasons, we will cover the costs. As a rule, anyone over the age of 18 is required to cover a portion of the medication cost. If you purchase medication without a prescription, you must cover the cost yourself.

Child sickness benefit

What is child sickness benefit?
If your child is under the age of 12 and is sick and needs to be looked after at home, we will, under certain conditions, help you by paying child sickness benefit. We do this because you will not normally be paid by your employer if you take time off work while your child is ill. Please feel free to contact us in this case.

How do I receive child sickness benefit?
Your child’s doctor will provide you with a medical certificate confirming your child’s illness. You must fill this out and send it to us. You can do this by post or online via our website or the DAK app. After it has been processed, the child sickness benefit will be paid into your account.

Maternity benefit

What kind of support does DAK offer during pregnancy?
Pregnant women and families can enjoy many benefits with DAK. These include: preventive medical check-ups, Mama Plus – covered up to €500, pregnancy care via the app, assistance in finding a midwife, and birth preparation courses and postnatal gym classes after the birth. If you would like to find out more, please do not hesitate to contact us.

What is maternity benefit?
Maternity benefit is paid during the last six weeks of pregnancy, on the day of delivery and during the first eight weeks postpartum. If you have twins, this period is extended by four weeks.

Am I entitled to maternity benefit?
As an employee entitled to sickness benefit, you are also entitled to maternity benefit from us. The amount of the maternity benefit depends on your income. In most cases, your employer covers the difference between your maternity benefit and your net income.
